Choosing the Best Way to Get Rid of Acne

Health Articles | December 17, 2009

The best way to get rid of acne is to attack the underlying cause -- how our bodies deal with androgen hormones. Skin care, antibiotics and Accutane all come up short. Holistic acne solutions are the best way to treat acne.

How we deal with androgen hormones is the underlying cause of acneand pimples and any treatment has to deal with these hormones first. These are usually described as "male" hormones, but women also produceandrogen hormones in their ovaries. If you want to effectively treatacne, you have to go much deeper than the skin surface. That's whytopical creams and gels are not very effective. So, what's the surestway to get rid of acne?

Washing Your Face

Is proper face washing the best way to avoid acne? It is if you askyour mother. Many people think that if you have acne it's becauseyou're dirty. That's not true. You don't get acne from washing yourface too little. It is more likely that you make your acne worse bywashing your face too much. Twice per day is enough. Use mild soap likeDove or a mild cleanser like Cetaphil. Use lukewarm water and pat drygently with a soft clean towel. You are trying to avoid irritatingyour skin. Washing your face is certainly not the best way to get rid of acne.

Antibiotics

Doyou know anyone who cured their acne with antibiotics? Didn't think so.That's because antibiotics kill the bacteria that makes acne worse, butdoesn't start it in the first place. The worst thing about antibiotics(even worse than the cost and the inconvenience) is that we producelots of very dangerous antibiotic resistant bacteria that will causereal problems going forward. Forget antibiotics. They don't work welland the price of their overuse is too high.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Actually, benzoyl peroxide creams and gels (2.5% strength) are fairly effectiveif you have mild acne. This stuff kills bacteria but also unclogs yourblocked pores. The problem is that it doesn't do much if you havemoderate to severe acne or you have nodular or cystic acne that is deepbelow the surface of the skin. Still, it's worth a look if you want todrop a few bucks for a generic over-the-counter cream at your localdrug store. Just remember not to use anything stronger than 2.5% anddon't bother with "medicated" washes or scrubs that don't do a thing.

Accutane

Accutaneis very strong and very effective. The problem is the "strong" part.Accutane was recently taken off U.S. shelves because of the severe sideeffects. Suicidal thoughts, liver damage and birth defects are a few ofthe potential side effects. Accutane must only be used as a treatmentof last resort. Don't forget that it can take up to a year for Accutaneto get rid of your acne and, unfortunately, your skin will look muchworse during this time. Is that fine with you? Probably not if you arein college or starting a new job and trying to look your best.

Holistic, Dietary Acne Treatments

Doctorshave been skeptical about dietary acne programs for one reason: doctorsare always skeptical about everything until there is scientificevidence to back up claims. The breakthrough came earlier this yearwhen researchers studying the effects of a low-glycemic index dietnoticed that this diet affected androgen hormones and how our bodiessynthesize androgen hormones. This is directly related to acne. Inshort, there is now proof that what you eat can have a significanteffect on your complexion. There are several holistic acne programsavailable on the internet. By changing what you eat, these programswork for many people without the serious side effects and costassociated with the other treatment methods. They work quickly, too. Most people will see results in one to six weeks. For my money, holisticArticle Search, dietary treatments are the best way to get rid of acne.
